
In an article published in Sustainable Views on 17 September 2026, examining how banks’ credit-risk assessments can disadvantage lower-emitting borrowers and undermine the financing of the energy transition, Rémy Estran-Fraioli, CEO of Scientific Climate Ratings, stressed that policymakers must improve the economic conditions for decarbonisation projects, making them more financially viable and providing greater certainty for investors and lenders:
“Other experts, such as Rémy Estran-Fraioli from the EDHEC Business School and chair of the board at the European Association of Credit Rating Agencies, say policymakers need to do more to “change the underlying economics to make decarbonisation projects sufficiently profitable and predictable to be bankable”.
“The study shows the limits of expecting banks or prudential risk models to substitute for climate policy,” says Estran-Fraioli. “Banks can be very powerful amplifiers of the transition, but they cannot replace transition policy.””
