Scientific Climate Ratings: from exposure to financial impact: a new standard in climate risk ratings

Our Scientific Climate Risk Ratings measure the financial impact of climate change on infrastructure companies worldwide. Using probability-weighted climate scenarios up to 2050, they quantify how transition, physical and macroeconomic risks change a company's enterprise value.

The Climate Risk Rating (CRR)

The CRR is a primarily solicited rating that quantifies the expected impact of climate risks on a company's enterprise value. Results are reported at 2035 and 2050 across multiple climate scenarios, with data available from 2030 to 2050.

1.

Transition risk: we project each company's carbon costs, net of the share passed on to customers, the shift in demand for its services, and the indirect cost shocks that travel through its supply chain.

2.

Physical risk: using each asset's geolocation and detailed boundaries, we estimate the damage and business disruption from acute hazards (floods, wildfires, storms and heatwaves) and the productivity loss from chronic warming.

3.

Macroeconomic risk: we capture how climate scenarios change interest rates and the cost of capital in each country and sector, and reprice the company's future cash flows accordingly.

4.

Decarbonisation and resilience: when a company provides its decarbonisation and adaptation measures, our team validates them against our ClimaTech database and adjusts the risk, counting both the benefit of each measure and its cost.

5.

Financial impact: our asset pricing model discounts every climate-adjusted cash flow into a change in enterprise value, then splits that change between equity and debt and derives the change in probability of default.

6.

Rating: each impact is scored from 1 to 100 and rated from A to G relative to the infrastructure universe, weighting climate scenarios by their likelihood, so companies can be compared with their peers.

Decoding Climate Risk Rating: Find the Answers You Need (FAQ section)

Climate risk is already repricing infrastructure assets - are you positioned for it?
Climate stress testing, TCFD, ESRS and IFRS S2 reporting, and long-term asset valuation all require scenario-consistent, financially material climate risk data. Request a sample report or schedule a methodology walkthrough with our team.
